Fourteen is a rough age for everyone, and so I’m sure it is for this reason that Catholics involve this tender age in the rite of Confirmation.

I had resisted mandatory church attendance in every way possible from approximately age three, and made a deal with my mother that if I were to be confirmed, I would then have the choice about when and how to worship.
